Kuldhara is an abandoned village located about 18 km south-west of the Jaisalmer city.

Rajasthan has no scarcity of ghost villages but few to them have got so much attention like Bhangarh and Kuldhara. This place deserved a visit when you were in Jaisalmer. Kuldhara is a haunted site and government of Rajasthan decided to make it a tourist spot in 2010.

Kuldhara village has a ghost story. 300 years ago the kuldhara village was settled by Paliwal Brahmins.  According to the popular myth, the villagers of Kuldhara supposed to pay taxes imposed on them to the minister of the state, Salim Singh. While visiting kuldhara, Salim singh’s eyes fell on the daughter of the village head and he expressed his desire to marry her. He threatened the villagers that if they refused not to fulfill his wish or refused to give him the girl, he would impose exaggerated taxes on them. Instead of submitting the order of Salim Singh, the chief of the village along with the people of 85 villages decided to leave Kuldhara and migrate to some other place. But this was not the end of the story. Before leaving Kuldhara, they put a curse on the village that no one will ever be able to settle in their village thenafter. Another possible reason of migrating can be that Salim Singh hiked the taxes to a greater extent that it became difficult for the local community to survive.

No one saw the villagers leaved nor did anyone know where they all gone. Since then, the village remains barren.
